COSTA MESA, Calif. –
The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team escaped with a narrow 3-2 victory Saturday, in what was supposed to be the first half of a doubleheader at Vanguard. The second game, which was postponed, will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Broncos stretch their record to 6-0 on the season, while the Lions of VU fall to 4-5 overall in 2011.

CPP starter Geoff Broussard pitched four strong innings to open Saturday's contest and Kevin Bosson threw the final 4.2 frames for the Broncos to uphold the visitors' lead. Each of the nine starters in the CPP lineup collected at least one hit, as the Broncos tallied 14 hits as a team.

After a scoreless first two innings, sophomore outfielder Jordan Whitman scored CPP's first run as he was brought in by a single up the middle from freshman third baseman Humberto Tovalin. The Lions answered in the bottom of the third inning, with Jeremiah Mejia scoring off two errors by the Broncos.

The Broncos took back the lead in the top of the fourth inning, with junior catcher Jenzen Torres starting the rally with a double to center field. After advancing to third base on a single by Travis Taijeron, Torres then scored on a Chris Miller single.

The host Lions managed to cut the CPP lead to 3-2 with a ninth-inning homerun by Bryson Rahier, but Bosson held on to the slim margin to pick up his second win of the season.

The bottom half of the Broncos' lineup excelled at the plate Saturday, with multi-hit games coming from each of the six through nine hitters: Tyson Edwards, Whitman, Tovalin and Joseph Eusebio. Leadoff hitter Ryan Goodman also collected two hits Saturday.

Through the 2011 campaign's first two weeks, the Broncos are batting .337 as a team. Travis Taijeron leads the way among CPP's regulars with a .435 mark. The Broncos have shown tremendous pitching depth as well, with a team earned run average of 3.46. The CPP arms have allowed just 12 walks in 52 innings pitched.
