Box Score

POMONA, Calif. -
Four Bronco players finished in double figures, with Tobias Jahn netting a double-double and Kevin Menner hitting 10 field goals, as the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team cruised to an 83-59 home victory Saturday over Sonoma State.

The Broncos shook off Friday's tough four-point loss to Humboldt State and shot extremely well Saturday, hitting 34 of their 50 shot attempts (68 percent). Leading the way in scoring was Menner, who went 10-for-16 from the field en route to his 23 points in 21 minutes played.

The shot percentage of 68.0 for CPP sets a program record for a mark against a league opponent. Earlier this season, the Broncos put up a 73.2 mark against non-conference foe American Sports to establish the overall benchmark.

CPP improves to 13-8 overall and 10-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while SSU falls to 8-14 overall and 6-12 in conference play.

The Broncos never trailed Friday and after Menner sunk a layup with 10:40 to play in the first half, putting CPP ahead 18-8, the hosts' lead didn't drop back into single digits the rest of the way. That Menner bucket was part of an 11-0 run for the Broncos, who put up points in a hurry with high-percentage looks at the basket.

CPP totaled twice as many points in the paint as SSU Saturday, 28 to 14. The Broncos outrebounded their opponent by a huge margin as well, 38-22. Aside from Jahn's 11 rebounds, Dwayne Fells collected six while Menner and Mitchel Anderson added five apiece. A layup from Fells closed out the first half's scoring, leaving the Broncos with a 37-17 lead going into intermission.

Facing a 44-22 deficit early in the second period, the SSU offense found a bit of rhythm as the visitors reeled off 12-straight points between the 16:30 and 13:50 marks. The closing part of that stretch featured five-consecutive points from Ben Washington, who finished the night as the lone Seawolves' player in double figures with 16 points.

The Broncos didn't let the score get any closer though, outscoring SSU 39-25 during the final 13 minutes of play.

Both squads struggled a bit at the free throw line, with CPP going 10-for-16 behind a 5-for-6 effort from Matt Rosser. SSU hit nine of its 16 attempts, tallying just a 56.3 mark. Rosser and Fells finished as the two other Bronco players with double-digit point totals, at 11 and 10 respectively.

Up next, CPP will travel to Northern California for road games next weekend against Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus. Currently, the Broncos stand in fourth place in the CCAA standings.
