POMONA, Calif. - Despite trailing 28-21 at halftime, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team rallied for a strong second half en route to a 55-48 win against Sonoma State Saturday.
Reyana Colson recorded the 20th double-double performance of her remarkable career, as she scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Saturday.
Megan Ford joined her teammate in double figures, with a 16-point night that included an 8-for-9 showing at the free throw line.
The Broncos maintain first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with a conference mark of 16-1. SSU falls to 7-15 overall and 5-13 through league action.
To open Saturday's contest, the Seawolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead on two buckets from Taylor Vigil. SSU shot well from beyond the arc throughout the game and a Jaclyn Bisordi trey proved to be the final points of the first half, lifting SSU ahead 28-21.
The Broncos' offense awoke in the second period, as a 9-0 run pulled CPP from a 36-31 deficit to a 40-36 advantage. A pair of successful free throws by
Sarah Semenero gave the Broncos their first lead of the game in that stretch. CPP didn't relinquish the advantage the rest of the way.
Colson continued to hustle on the offensive and defensive ends, playing 34 minutes while picking up the 19 points, 11 boards, six assists and four assists.
Although SSU managed to cut the margin back to three, 48-45, with 3:37 to play in regulation, the Broncos hit six of their last seven free throws to keep the Seawolves at a distance.
The two teams struggled to hit shots, as CPP fired at 33.3 percent while SSU hit at a 34.7 clip. The Seawolves went 8-for-22 from three-point range and the Broncos put up a 2-for-16 effort in that category. Overall, CPP forcing SSU to commit 21 turnovers made the difference.
Semenero contributed a solid game for the Broncos, as she finished with nine points and five rebounds. Leading the Seawolves' attack was Vigil, who netted 11 points and three assists.
The Broncos return to action next weekend with road games against Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.
