Box Score
CHICO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team, in its top offensive performance of the season thus far, picked up its 20th win with a 93-79 road decision Friday over Chico State.
Five of the Broncos' players scored in double figures, led by Reyana Colson's 25 points and Sarah Semenero's career-high 19. As a team, CPP went 30-for-60 from the field, including 8-for-15 from three-point range.
The 93 points scored by the Broncos is the largest total in program history since CPP reached 100 on Dec. 3, 2005.
The Broncos, holding first place in both the California Collegiate Athletic Association and the West Region rankings, improve to 20-2 overall and 17-1 in conference play. On the losing side, the Wildcats drop to 14-9 overall and 11-8 through league action.
As usual, Colson contributed in a wide range of ways, collecting seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals to go along with her 25 points to lead all scorers. CSUC held an eight-point lead in the first half and took a 35-33 advantage into intermission. The CPP attack proved to be too strong in the final 11 minutes though, as the Broncos scored 35 points in that stretch.
The Wildcats were led on offense by a career-high 23 points from Pauline Ferrall. CSUC shot slightly better than CPP, at 51.7 percent. Nonetheless, the Broncos forced the Wildcats to commit 18 turnovers and CPP managed to get to the free throw line 18 more times than its opponent.
CSUC's largest lead came at the 6:33 mark in the opening period, as Kristin Marquardt hit a jumper to push the score to 27-19. The Broncos rallied back though for a 10-2 run over the next few minutes, a spurt that was capped off with a Jennifer Bryant trey and a pair of jumpers by Colson.
Rosslyn Beard dropped in a layup with six seconds to go in the half to bring the score to 35-33 in favor of the Wildcats.
The two squads found the score tied five different times in the opening six minutes of the second half, before the CPP offense really got going. With the score 51-51 at about the 13:45 mark, the Broncos found their rhythm from beyond the arc.
A Bryant trey at the 9:56 mark put CPP ahead 65-55, a double-digit margin that the Broncos were able to hold for much of the remainder. Semenero led CPP in the three-pointer category, notching three, while Bryant and J.J. Judge added two apiece. Bryant proved to be perfect in her shooting Friday, going 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 at the strike.
La'kenya Simon West also posted an impressive night at the free throw line, going 8-for-8 despite getting in foul trouble herself. Megan Ford barely missed a double-double, collecting 12 points and nine rebounds.
Up next, the Broncos will travel to Turlock to challenge Cal State Stanislaus at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The Warriors put up a tremendous offensive performance Friday as well, defeating Cal State San Bernardino, 90-82. CSUS holds marks of 12-11 overall and 10-9 in CCAA play.
