POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team might have hoped that the postponment of the 6-0 game on Friday would help in taking some momentum away from the opposing Chico State squad. The Wildcats managed to maintain their hot hitting Saturday though as CSUC went on to defeat CPP, 9-0.
It marked the first loss of the season for the Broncos, dropping their overall record to 7-1 and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Wildcats, ranked No. 19 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) 2011 Division II Preseason Poll, improve to 3-1 overall and 1-1 through conference play.
The game continued exactly where it left off from the day before. Rain had postponed the contest in the top of the eighth inning with CSUC leading 6-0. After play resumed, the Wildcats added another three runs in the eighth off of Scott Sibley to make the score 9-0.
After singles by Shane Kroker and Ben Manlove, Ian McKay would drive in Kroker with a single to left field. McKay went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in for this contest that stretched across 24 hours. As a team, CSUC collected a total of 17 hits for the game.
CPP first baseman Chris Miller, batting out of the No. 5 spot in the lineup, collected two of the hosts' five hits in the contest.
The Broncos look to rebound on Sunday as they take on CSUC for another doubleheader to finish off the four-game series. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. and the day will feature both a nine-inning contest with a seven-inning game afterwards.
