AZUSA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team appeared in almost midseason form Saturday, as the Broncos opened up their 2011 campaign with an all-day invite at Azusa Pacific.

Top sprinters Corey Arnold, Matt Boudreau and Carter Griffin highlighted CPP's strong showing in those events, while a large group of Bronco distance runners finished strong in the 5,000-meter race, led by sophomore Ryan Carrell.

"We put our athletes in a lot of off events to really test where they were at," Broncos' head coach Troy Johnson said. "They responded really well and we're definitely on the right track."

Griffin posted the fastest 60-meter dash time, crossing the line in 6.83. Not far off that mark was Arnold, who posted the fourth-best in that event at 7.10. Griffin starred in the 200-meter race as well, finishing second to APU's Zachary Keene by just 0.02, 21.68 to 21.70.

Boudreau shined in the 400-meter dash, taking first with a time of 48.63. One of his teammates, Jake Deavers, placed third in that race at 49.97.

Carrell led a pack of five CPP runners that placed in the top 10 for the 5,000-meter run. He crossed the line at 15:37.25, followed closely by Matthew Prentice (15:40.30), Stephen Kent (15:45.10) and Scott McMichael (15:46.25).

Alberto Diaz turned in the top time for the Broncos in the 600-meter race, placing fourth with a time of 1:23.47. In the pole vault, Derek Green posted a mark of 13-7 to take third.

CPP will return to action next Saturday at the Claremont Relays, conveniently held in nearby Claremont, Calif.
