POMONA, Calif. - Featuring a balanced attack and stellar shooting, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team captured a 63-50 victory Thursday at home against UC San Diego.

Although CPP still has one regular season contest Friday at home, the Broncos' first-round CCAA Tournament matchup is set. Based on Thursday's results across the league and how the tiebreakers fall, fifth-seeded CPP will travel to fourth-seeded San Francisco State on Tuesday to take on the Gators. Tipoff will be 7 p.m.
On Thursday the Broncos built up a 33-19 halftime lead, with most of the margin being gained toward the later part of the opening period. After UCSD's James McCann sunk a three-pointer to tie the score at 10-10 with just more than six minutes passed, CPP reeled off an 8-0 run. That spurt started with back-to-back buckets by
Kevin Menner and ended with successful shots from
Dwayne Fells and
Terrence Drisdom.
Following a Tritons' score moments later, the Broncos put up a 6-0 stretch. The CPP advantage shot as high as 15 at one point but settled back to 14 at intermission.
The Broncos kept their lead in double digits for most of the second half, until UCSD's Tyler McGrath hit a trey with 3:48 to play to cut the margin to 55-46 in favor of CPP. The hosts bounced their advantage back up though, securing the 13-point victory.
On the evening, the Broncos shot 49 percent from the field while holding the Tritons to a 34.7-percent mark. Jahn led the way in that category, going 7-for-9 en route to his 15 points to lead all scorers.
Mitchel Anderson and
Kevin Menner also tallied double figures with 12 and 10 respectively.
CPP matched UCSD on the free throw line, with the hosts going 11-for-14 from the strike.
Matt Rosser hit all six of his free-throw attempts and
Dwayne Fells led the team in boards with seven to help the Broncos to a 33-30 rebounding edge.
Fine passing was also key to the CPP win. The Broncos tallied 16 assists on their 25 field goals and Rosser paced the team in that category with six.
Up next for CPP will be a 7:30 p.m. matchup Friday against Cal State East Bay as part of Senior Night.
