Box Score
POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team collected a 77-60 home victory over Cal State East Bay Friday to close out the 2010-11 regular season.
The Broncos improve to 22-4 overall and 19-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CSUEB finishes its campaign at 4-22 overall and 4-18 through conference play. Friday's results around the league finalized the first-round matchups for the CCAA Tournament. CPP will host Cal State Stanislaus on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Prior to Friday's contest, the Broncos celebrated Senior Night in honoring the academic and athletic achievements of
Reyana Colson and
La'kenya Simon West. Once the gift-giving and pictures were taken care of, the senior duo got down to business.
They ended up as two of the five CPP players tallying double figures, with Colson registering 15 points and Simon West recording 14 of her own.
Although the visiting Pioneers kept the game close through the opening stages, the Broncos found their rhythm and rolled out to a large lead. After CSUEB knotted the score at 19-19 with just over 11 minutes gone in the first half, CPP sprinted out to an 18-0 run.
That spectactular stretch started with back-to-back three pointers from
Sarah Semenero and ended with a
Jennifer Bryant trey. The Pioneers failed to find their footing and the Broncos took a 43-24 advantage into the intermission.
The CPP edge pushed as high as 20 points twice in the second half, appropriately enough on jumpers from Colson and Simon West.
Despite the Broncos being outshot 57.9 to 47.5 in percentages, control of possession made the difference Friday at Kellogg Gym. CPP forced the visitors to turn the ball over 24 times, while the Broncos tallied just nine turnovers of their own.
Simon West paced the team in steals with four and Colson nearly secured a double-double with eight assists to go along with her 15 points.
Megan Ford shared the team lead in points Friday with 15, including a 5-for-5 showing at the free throw line. Semenero totaled 12 points and
Charlene Popoff added 10.
As for their next matchup, the Broncos and Warriors split their regular season series. The first-round winners will advance to Cal State East Bay for the semifinal and final rounds of the CCAA Tournament.
