POMONA, Calif. - Behind a 24-point performance from
Reyana Colson and a double-double by
Charlene Popoff, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team cruised to a 76-55 victory Tuesday over Cal State Stanislaus in the opening round of the conference tournament.
"Payback was our mentality," Colson said. "With them beating us a couple weeks ago, it messed up our chances of being No. 1 in the conference after the regular season. That was fresh in our minds and we wanted to make a statement."
The second-seeded Broncos will travel to Cal State East Bay, the site of the semifinal and final rounds of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament. The next challenger for CPP will be third-seeded UC San Diego, with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
The Broncos outrebounded CSUS Tuesday at Kellogg Gym by a margin of 47-26. Leading CPP in that category was Popoff, who recorded a career-high 12 points and 11 rebounds en route to her second double-double performance of the season.
Sarah Semenero and
Megan Ford finished as the two other Bronco players in double figures with point totals of 12 and 10 respectively.
Both teams traded leads through the opening 12 minutes but after that, the CPP offense found its rhythm. With the Broncos holding a one-point lead, 16-15, at the 7:26 mark, the hosts ripped off a 19-5 run to close out the period. Colson and Ford started the game off strong, registering 10 points each through the first 20 minutes.
Carrying the 15-point margin into the second half, CPP was able to spread the distance even wider. The Broncos opened the period on a 9-0 run, with seven of those points coming from Colson. The spread reached as large as 31 points, 61-30, after a jumper from Colson at the 9:45 mark.
It hit that 31-point mark a few minutes later as well, when Popoff dropped in a layup to make the score 71-40. Popoff turned in a stellar second half, recording 10 points and eight rebounds during the closing period.
Although CPP shot just 61.1-percent from the free throw line, it was the second-chance opportunities that put the Broncos so far ahead of the Warriors. CPP snagged 22 offensive rebounds, while CSUS tallied just eight.
Leading the Warriors in points Tuesday was Katie Busi, who notched 19. She also added 10 rebounds for a double-double performance.
