Cal-Nevada Invite Complete Results

CLAREMONT, Calif. –
The Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team saved its best for last Sunday.

Just before the Cal-Nevada Invitational came to a close, the Broncos' 4x400 relay group of Matt Boudreau, Corey Arnold, Jacob Deavers and Carter Griffin captured first place by more than two seconds.

The CPP quartet (3:12.65) topped a variety of Division I competitors, including second-place UC Irvine (3:14.87) and third-place Sacramento State (3:15.47). The Broncos' time stands as the sixth-fastest in program history for that event and the best mark since 1993.

Although the CPP relay had snagged a provisional national qualifier earlier this month at the Trojan Invite, Sunday's time of 3:12.65 improves the group's standing by nearly a full second. Now, the Broncos have their sights set on the school record mark of 3:10.54 set in 1972.

“It was a great way to end a long weekend,” CPP head coach Troy Johnson said. “That record of 3:10.54 is definitely within their range and we're definitely going for it. The way these guys are working, you'll see their times continue to drop.”

Shane Cioni had a big day Sunday for the Broncos as well, posting a shot put distance of 47-5.75, more than two feet farther than his previous personal best.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Deavers finished fifth with a time of 14.93. During the next event for the men, the 400-meter dash, Griffin placed fourth at 48.03 and Arnold followed right behind at 48.39.

After some time away from competition, the Broncos will return to action with the Pomona Pitzer Invitational on April 9 in Claremont.
