HAYWARD, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered a 63-49 loss Friday to Cal State Dominguez Hills in semifinal action of the conference tournament.
As a result, the Broncos' 2010-11 season comes to an end with CPP holding a record of 17-11. The Toros, ranked third in the latest NCAA West Region rankings, improve to 22-6. CSUDH will take on the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Humboldt State and Cal State L.A.
The semifinal and final stages of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament are held on the campus of Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif.
The Toros limited the Broncos to just four points through the first nine minutes of Friday's contest, jumping out to a 19-4 advantage. The CSUDH lead pushed as high as 18 points at one point but CPP was able to chip away a bit, moving into halftime down 31-18.
Terrence Drisdom finished the first 20 minutes strong, going 3-for-3 from the field in the opening half.
The Broncos found considerable rhythm to open up the the second period, starting the half on a 13-6 spurt behind sharp shooting from
Donnelle Booker and
Mark Rutledge. That stretch cut the margin to single digits, 37-29.
A layup from the Toros' Robert Willhite put CSUDH back up by double figures at the 13:34 mark and the advantage stayed in that mode for the remainder of the game. Four Toro players ended up with double-digit point totals, as Marquintice Davis paced CSUDH with 13 points. Michael Cox, Zareh Zargayan and James Cawthorne totaled 10 apiece.
Booker led the Broncos with 13 points, while Rutledge and
Kevin Menner contributed 12 and 11 respectively. As a team, CPP shot just 29.2 percent and the Broncos were outrebounded 42-25. One of the few positives on the stat sheet was free throw shooting, as CPP went 15-for-18 with Menner leading the way through a 9-for-10 showing.
Friday's game marked the first time all season that the Broncos shot under the 30-percent mark.
The achievements of the CPP departing seniors should be highlighted though, as Booker, Rutledge, Menner and
Tobias Jahn close out their memorable careers. Booker finished third on the Bronco all-time leaderboards with 116 games played, while Jahn wasn't far behind with 112.
Menner closed out the 2010-11 campaign strong, averaging close to 16 points per game and 80-percent free throw shooting over the last 13 contests. Rutledge, Jahn and Booker all proved critical in the Broncos' 2010 Division II championship run.
