Game 1 /
Game 2
SAN FRANCISCO - Behind a complete-game performance from
Kevin Bosson, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team picked up a 5-1 victory in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader. The Broncos' bats couldn't get going in game two though, as CPP fell 1-0 to San Francisco State for the split.
The Broncos now stand at 22-12 overall and 15-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Gators hold marks of 12-22 overall and 7-20 through conference play. CPP remains in the thick of the race for a spot in the CCAA Tournament.
Game One: CPP 5, SFSU 1
Bosson threw 119 pitches across the nine innings in game one, scattering five hits while striking out four of the Gators' hitters. It marked the longest outing of his career and with the CPP offense rolling in the later innings, the Broncos were able to secure the 5-1 result.
SFSU managed to put the first run on the board, as Trevor Pasiecznik lifted a solo homerun over the leftfield fence in the fifth inning. CPP came right back in its next at-bat, as
Chris Miller singled through the left side of the infield to bring two teammates in to score -
Jordan Whitman and
Travis Taijeron.
The runs didn't stop there for the Broncos, with the visitors getting three more in the top of the eighth. The big hit in that inning came from
Tyson Edwards, in the form of a one-out single that brought home Miller and
Jenzen Torres.
Bosson continued to roll right along and he ended up snagging his seventh win of the season and fifth in his last five starts. With Saturday's result, Bosson lowered his earned run average to 3.02.
Game Two: SFSU 1, CPP 0
In the later seven-inning contest, a pitching duel ensued between SFSU's Nic Banaugh and CPP's
Casey Yokubaitis. The two squads combined for just seven hits in the contest, while the Broncos couldn't capitalize on two errors on the Gators.
The lone score in the game came in the second inning, when Kevin Dultz singled to left field to score Pasiecznik. Yokubaitis ended up throwing 4.1 innings of one-run ball, before CPP went to the bullpen.
Jake Reed finished in relief with 1.2 no-hit innings while picking up two strikeouts.
Banaugh proved to be the star of the game though, going the complete seven innings and giving up just three hits to the Broncos. CPP put a runner on third base with one out in the sixth inning but failed to bring a run across. The Broncos also had a runner on third with two outs in the seventh but once again, no scores could be produced.
Whitman and
Mike Santora tallied hits in both contests Saturday, raising their hit streaks to 14 and 12 respectively.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Sunday with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
