POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team opened its 2011 season in fine fashion Thursday, as four different Broncos scored in a 4-2 victory over Grand Canyon.

Three of the four CPP goals came from newcomers, with Alison Sauve, Aneska Alino and Cindy Paez each notching their first career scores in a Bronco uniform. Junior forward Angela Garcia also came through with a clutch goal, giving CPP a 2-1 lead midway through the first half. Garcia also had an assist on the eventual game-winning score, bringing her point total to a career-high three.

Despite the two squads taking a 2-2 score into halftime, the Broncos' defense shut out the Antelopes through the final 45 minutes while the CPP offense continued to click. Stellar passing and strong finishes allowed the Broncos to cruise to the two-goal victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Rohman recorded a career-high 11 saves to bolster the host's defense.

Up next for CPP (1-0-0) will be an 11 a.m. home match Saturday against Colorado Mesa. The Lopes fall to 0-1-0 after Thursday's result.

GCU struck first on Thursday, as Chelsea Santos dropped a short pass back to the top of the 18-yard box in the 26th minute. Lopes' junior midfielder Sasha Scott launched a hard shot over the head of Rohman to give GCU a 1-0 advantage.

It didn't take long for the Broncos to even the tally though, as the scoring play started with a throw-in on the left side by senior Valerie Strawn. Sauve won the ball and dribbled up the left side into the box. As her defender closed in, she ripped a shot into the top of the net at 28:44.

The CPP attack kept its momentum and the team's second goal came less than four minutes later. Strawn picked up her second assist of the day, sending a through ball past the Lopes' back line and to the feet of a charging Garcia. The junior finished strong, slipping the ball between the legs of GCU keeper Stephanie Phillips on the breakaway.

The Lopes managed to tie the score at 2-2 before the first half ended, as junior Marina Nesic fired a long free kick into the top of the net.

The match stayed even for a good portion of the second half, until the Broncos' offense came alive again. Garcia, working into the left side of the opponent's 18-yard area, slipped a rolling pass into the goalmouth. Despite being closely tracked by a defender, Alino tapped the ball past the keeper for the eventual game-winner.

Just for good measure, Paez tallied the match's final score with a long shot from atop the 18. Jennifer Rivera picked up the assist  with a short pass to her teammate.

The Lopes finished with a 26-20 shot advantage, while the Broncos attempted six corner kicks to GCU's three.
