SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Improved play from Cal Poly Pomona nearly forced a fourth set but the final result Saturday still brought a clean 3-0 sweep for the host Cal State San Bernardino squad ranked No. 2 at the Division II level.
On the second night of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season volleyball action, the Broncos struggled to keep up with the Coyotes in the first two sets as CSUSB secured scores of 25-17 and 25-13.
CPP (3-3, 0-2 CCAA) mustered a close contest in the third frame, even pulling ahead 22-21 after a kill from
Kristin McNeese. The Coyotes (6-0, 2-0 CCAA) won the final four points though, as they gained the last two off back-to-back block assists from Samantha Middleborn and Kate Barton.
McNeese ended the evening with a team-high 12 kills while
Ashley Marshman turned in an efficient night on the attack, collecting seven kills with a hitting percentage of .500. Broncos' freshman
Lauren Jones showed some versatility, tallying five kills and three block assists.
The third set remained close throughout, with the two squads changing leads four different times. Junior setter
Jamie Kidd put together a solid showing late in the match, notching eight of her team-high 15 assists in the third and final frame.
At one point the Broncos faced a 14-10 deficit but Jones and Marshman helped CPP regain some momentum. Jones posted two-straight kills, the first coming off a Kidd assist and the second after a set from
Katie Colin. On the next point, an attack attempt from the Coyotes' Priscilla Collings was turned away by blocks assists from Marshman and Jones. To even the score at 14-14, Marshman fired a kill in between the CSUSB defense.
Leading the Coyotes' attack on the night were 2010 National Player of the Year Samantha Middleborn and Collings, who tallied 10 kills apiece. Setter Camille Smith added 26 assists.
The stretch of road matches continues for the Broncos next week, starting with a 5 p.m. matchup at San Francisco State on Thursday. The Gators enter a Sunday contest against UC San Diego with an 0-1 overall mark.
