SAN FRANCISCO - With the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team clinging to a 1-0 lead and less than four minutes remaining in regulation at San Francisco State Sunday, the Gators' Sasha Chalak stepped up to take a penalty kick looking to send the match into overtime.

Standing in his way though was Broncos' junior goalkeeper Kris Minton. For the second-straight game, Minton came up with a penalty kick save. The Sugarland, Texas, native preserved the CPP victory to complete the Broncos' road sweep of the opening weekend for California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) competition.

“Our defense has been improving every game and it was great to get our first shutout,” Minton said. “It starts with the forwards and moves back, everyone contributed today.”

With fairly equal chances through the early going, the Broncos' offense broke through for a goal at the 15:27 mark. Sean Gurley initiated the scoring play with a direct kick just inside the midfield line. On the receiving end in the box, Daniel Gomez connected on a header past SFSU goalkeeper Eric Scolman. It marked the second goal of 2011 for Gomez.

After Minton made his third save of the first half in the 24th minute, the CPP defense tightened up. The Broncos held the Gators to zero shots on goal for the remainder of the opening period.

The back-and-forth resumed in the second half, with one of SFSU's better chances coming in the 58th minute. After an initial attempt by Chalak was deflected off a Broncos' defender, the Gators' Kevin Johnson lined a shot off the post before CPP managed to eventually clear the ball away.

The host SFSU squad outshot the Broncos 8-1 in the final 10 minutes but Minton and the CPP defense turned away the Gators time and time again. Minton's PK stop on Chalak proved to be the best save of the bunch.

Play turned a bit chippy as a combined 30 fouls were called through the 90 minutes, including back-to-back yellow cards and a subsequent red at the 88:02 mark to Luis Gonzalez. After notching at least one goal in each of the season's first three matches, Gonzalez was held scoreless Sunday. The senior forward from Long Beach, Calif., will be forced to miss CPP's next match because of the red card.

Minton matched his season-high total in saves with eight while Scolman played a solid match as well for SFSU (1-1-2, 0-1-1 CCAA), collecting six stops.

The Broncos (3-1-0, 2-0-0 CCAA) start a six-match homestand on Friday with a 7 p.m. contest against local rival Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes (0-2-0 CCAA) suffered a 2-1 home loss Sunday to UC San Diego.
