SAN FRANCISCO – Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State entered Sunday's match with undefeated records and ended up departing with undefeated records as well, after playing to a 0-0 draw through 110 minutes of action.
The result concluded the first weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season women's soccer action. Both the Broncos and Gators stand at 3-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 through conference play.
CPP goalkeeper
Emily Miller recorded her first career shutout as she totaled two saves. For the opposition's netminder, Annicia Jones, it marked shutout No. 22 during her time at SFSU. Senior forward
Valerie Strawn led the Broncos in shots with five, while Kiley Williams collected the same amount to pace the Gators.
The two squads generated a handful of scoring opportunities, with CPP and SFSU recording two shots on goal apiece through Sunday's contest.
Some of the Broncos' best chances came out of the gates in the second half, as
Jennifer Rivera attempted a pair of corner kicks. The resulting shot on the first came from Strawn, who sent the ball above the frame, and the second by
Justine Barclay was blocked by a Gators' defender.
Similar to the men's soccer match earlier on Sunday, the women's game also played out as physical and scrappy in nature. The squads combined for 21 fouls and each side received a yellow card.
Through the two overtime periods, the Broncos won three corner kick opportunities. In the end though, neither team could find a way to get on the scoreboard.
Starring on the defensive side of things for CPP were
Michelle Nava and
Kristin Mihara, as the Broncos held the Gators to just two shots on goal.
CPP begins a six-match homestand on Friday with a 4:30 p.m. matchup against Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes (2-1-1, 0-1-1) played the nationally-ranked Tritons of UC San Diego to a 1-1 tie on Sunday.
