TURLOCK, Calif. – One night removed from a dramatic five-set win, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team couldn't keep the momentum going Friday as the Broncos suffered a 3-1 loss at Cal State Stanislaus.
CPP played the Warriors close all evening but the host CSUS squad squeaked out a 26-24 decision in the fourth set to keep the match from extending into a fifth frame. The Warriors dropped the first set 25-22 but won the next three, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24.
The result evens the Broncos' overall record at 4-4, while dropping their conference mark to 1-3. CPP will return to action Saturday at Chico State, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
On Friday, CSUS jumped out to a 14-9 lead but the Broncos rallied for eight-straight points to take a commanding advantage in the opening set. That spurt featured two kills apiece from
Karissa Lagmay and
Taylr Kreutziger. Despite the Warriors knotting the score at 21-21 eventually, the CPP attack picked up its pace once again and Lagmay closed out the 25-22 result with a service ace.
CSUS found a rhythm in set two and once Melissa Bishop tallied a kill for the hosts on the first point, the Warriors never trailed again in that frame. They were helped by a dig total of 16, with six by Andrea Fett, in reaching the 25-15 win that tied up the set count 1-1.
The third set proved to be pivotal, as it featured five occasions of the score being tied. Senior
Ashley Marshman came on strong for the Broncos, notching three kills in the frame with a hitting percentage of .429. She finished the night with six kills in total. CPP only trailed 20-19 after a block by Lagmay but the Warriors rattled off five of the final six points to take the 25-20 decision.
The final frame ended up being even closer, as the score was tied eight different times. The Broncos helped themselves by tallying eight block assists, while setter
Katie Colin turned in her top frame of the night as she recorded 11 assists and five digs. With CSUS leading 24-23 on its first match point, Marshman and
Lauren Jones came through with a huge block to tie the score. The Warriors secured the next two points though to end the Broncos' chances Friday.
Overall, CSUS ended the night with a .211 hitting percentage while CPP could only muster a .115 clip. The Warriors' Lianne Vicchio finished with a match-high 16 kills.
