CHICO, Calif. – This week's three-match road trip started Thursday with the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team earning the satisfaction of being the come-from-behind victor in a five-set contest. On Saturday at Chico State, the Broncos found themselves on the opposite end of a similar marathon.
Karissa Lagmay led CPP in kills with 12, while also adding 14 digs. The Broncos' setters also performed well as
Katie Colin totaled 24 assists and 11 digs to go along with
Jamie Kidd's seven kills and 12 digs. The strong defense didn't end there, as
Kelly Bonja paced the visitors in digs with 22.
All of that wasn't enough though to overcome the two-sided Wildcats' attack of Jessica Leek and Jacqueline Johnson, who registered kill totals of 15 and 14 respectively to help CSUC charge back and take the match by set scores of 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 25-13, 15-9.
In the opening set, the Wildcats staked a 5-0 lead with two of those points coming from service aces by Leek. Although CPP kept pace with the hosts for the remainder of the frame, the Broncos couldn't recover after such a strong start for CSUC.
Lauren Jones and Kidd paced CPP in that set with three kills apiece, as the Wildcats took the eight-point win.
With the continued strong play of Jones and Kidd along with a surge of Lagmay kills, the Broncos bounced back in set number two. At one point CPP held a 14-7 advantage but the Wildcats chipped away at the margin to eventually bring the score to 20-18 in favor of the Broncos. CPP did just enough to secure the 25-22 decision, as Kidd and Lagmay provided the final two kills for the visitors heading into the intermission.
Although the Wildcats jumping out to a 4-0 lead in set number three could have signaled a similar result to the first frame, the Broncos managed to rally in the second instance of a stellar CSUC start. This time it was
Kristin McNeese's time to shine, as the senior right-side hitter collected five kills to help CPP take the 25-21 result and the subsequent 2-1 lead in sets.
In a one-set hole at home, the Wildcats rallied in the fourth. Johnson recorded six of her 14 kills in that frame, helping CSUC cruise to a 25-13 victory. That momentum carried right into the fifth and final set, when Johnson struck for two more kills to go along with a service ace to help the hosts take the 15-9 result to close out the narrow 3-2 win.
Saturday's contest ends a five-match road swing for the Broncos, who will return to action on Thursday at Darlene May Gym. CPP hosts Cal State East Bay with first serve set for 7 p.m.
