PHOENIX, Ariz. - Despite being on the offensive much of the night, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team found itself in a 2-1 deficit heading into the final 15 minutes of its season opener against Dixie State.
The Broncos rallied for two late goals though, with
Daniel Gomez knocking in the game-winning score in the 82nd minute. The scoring play was initiated off a
Juan Mejia corner kick, followed by Gomez tapping in a rebound chance at the front of the net.
"Mejia really did all the gritty work for us tonight," CPP head coach Lance Thompson said. "We had him out there at central midfield and he showed a lot of energy and fight."
Playing in a tournament hosted by Grand Canyon, the Broncos improve to 1-0-0 while the Red Storm fall to 0-1-0. Up next for CPP will be an 8:15 p.m. matchup on Sunday against the host Antelopes of GCU.
The Broncos attempted three corner kicks in the first half and DSC managed just two shots through the first 45 minutes, but neither team could get on the scoreboard until CPP broke through late in the period. With an assist from
Fabian Perez, senior Ricardo Reyez lined a shot past Red Storm keeper Tyler Walters to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead just 12 seconds before the halftime buzzer sounded.
DSC found the equalizer at 50:19, when Clayton Alexander went unmarked at the far post on a corner kick and headed the ball past the Broncos' goalkeeper
Kris Minton. The Red Storm added another score in the 74th minute, with Nyle Ortiz scoring off a Jorge Lopez assist.
The lead didn't hold up for long though, as 2010 All-American
Luis Gonzalez notched his first goal of the season at 75:41 when he tapped it in from the right post to even the score.
Mejia's solid corner kick in the 82nd minute led to a rebound chance for Gomez, who capitalized and lifted the Broncos to a 3-2 advantage. The CPP back line, consisting of
Victor Gutierrez,
Liam Hall and Gomez, helped hold the Red Storm to zero shots through the final 13 minutes.
