POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team rolled to back-to-back sweeps on the first day of the 2011 season.
Early in Friday's action at the seven-team tournament hosted by the Broncos, CPP topped Anderson (0-2) behind double-digit kill totals from
Karissa Lagmay and
Kristin McNeese. To conclude the day, the Broncos defeated Dixie State (1-1) with more strong performances on the attack from Lagmay and McNeese while
Taylr Kreutziger added 10 kills.
CPP ended up with its highest attack percentages in set three of each of the matches and sophomore
Katie Colin consistently dished her teammates nicely-placed sets. The Torrance, Calif., native ended the day with 59 assists.
"Katie did a tremendous job with her sets and we just tried to capitalize on those opportunities," McNeese said. "The newcomers definitely added a lot of energy and that helped us as well."
The Broncos found themselves down 11-5 early in the first set but the attack picked up and the hosts took their first lead at 18-17 on a kill from Lagmay. The CPP defense also forced the Red Storm into dismal attacking percentages, including .143 in the first, .140 in the second and -.037 in the third. The first set moved to a 21-21 score but three DSC attack errors helped the Broncos wrap up the win.
CPP carried that momentum into the second set, with the Broncos pushing out to a 7-4 lead after a
Courtney Alberi kill. The momentum swung back the other way quickly through, with the Red Storm taking a 17-11 lead. DSC's Alex Shearer and Brita Jensen contributed four kills each in the second set. Lagmay came through in the clutch though for the Broncos, connecting on four kills in the final five points to carry CPP back from a 23-18 deficit.
The strong finishes in sets one and two for the Broncos seemed to deflate the Red Storm's attacking chances in set number three, as DSC only hit -.037 in the final frame. Once CPP reached the 10-point mark in the third set, the Broncos' lead didn't drop below six.
CPP will return to action Saturday with two more matches to conclude tournament play. The Broncos take on Western New Mexico (0-1) at 1:30 p.m. in Kellogg Gym and then CPP challenges Simon Fraser (0-2) at 5:15 p.m. in Darlene May Gym.

The Broncos recorded a 3-0 sweep of Anderson Friday afternoon to start the 2011 season.
Lagmay and McNeese led the Broncos' attack with kill totals of 11 and 10 respectively, while
Ashley Marshman recorded an attack percentage of .364 while adding seven kills. Colin turned in a solid all-around performance, collecting 32 assists, 10 digs and three kills.
The two squads played close in the first set, with the lead changing hands on seven different occasions. The Broncos took a 24-22 lead on a kill from McNeese but the Trojans rallied back to tie the score at 24-24. Ultimately, CPP showed its resiliency and pulled out the 26-24 first-set win after a Lagmay kill to the right back and then an attack error on AU. Kreutziger finished the opening frame with four kills on a .571 attacking percentage.
The Broncos stormed out to an 8-0 lead to start the second set, with kills from four different players. CPP's advantage stayed at a wide margin, until the Trojans chipped away a bit in the later stages. A Marshman kill finished AU off, as the Broncos used a 25-18 second-set score to move into the third.
While
Erin Noriega served CPP to its strong start in the second set, it was Lagmay's turn in the third. The senior from Burbank, Calif., notched four service aces while helping the Broncos jump out to a 10-0 lead. The CPP margin didn't drop lower than eight and McNeese picked up the pace on the attack to ensure a sweep for the hosts.
