POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team battled tough Thursday against Cal State East Bay, but it wasn't enough to win as the Pioneers topped the Broncos 3-1 at Darlene May Gym.
With the result, CPP falls to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Pioneers of CSUEB improve to 7-2 overall and 3-2 through conference action.
Coming into this match,
Karissa Lagmay, senior outside hitter, led the team in kills with 87 while
Kelly Bonja led the team in digs with 100. Going up against the Pioneers defense, which is fourth in the league for digs and second in the league for blocks, the Broncos were going to have to play consistently strong on the attack.
Being cheered on by a crowd of 735,
Ashley Marshman had a hitting percentage of .857 in game one to help the Broncos win the first frame, 25-20.
The Pioneers started strong and served tough to start the second game. The Broncos fought back with kills from
Diana Lake and Lagmay to trim the margin to 13-10, but the Pioneers kept their lead to win game two 25-17.
The Broncos fed off the energy of the crowd to start game three. Both teams were going point for point until CSUEB started to break away with a three point lead at 15-12, forcing CPP head coach
Rosie Wegrich to take a timeout. The Broncos kept fighting as Lake had back-to-back points with a kill and a solo block; however, the Pioneers maintained their advantage to win game three 25-21.
Game four was a similar story with the Pioneers keeping a lead of three or more points throughout much of the frame. With a few match points on the line, CPP couldn't hold on and lost game four, 25-18.
Broncos' senior
Kristin McNeese came on strong late, collecting five kills and a hitting percentage of .625 through the evening. Lake ended up with a team-high 13 kills.
Up next, CPP will host Cal State Monterey Bay at 7 p.m. Saturday in Darlene May Gym. The Otters stand at 5-2 overall and 2-2 through league action.
