POMONA, Calif. - Friday's match at Kellogg Field appeared destined for overtime but the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team allowed a late goal to Sonoma State and the visiting Seawolves held on for the 1-0 victory.
Taylor Edmonds came through in the clutch for SSU as she tapped in a close-range chance in the 86th minute after receiving a cross from Holly Weaver. It marked Edmonds' second score of the 2011 season.
The result marks the second-straight loss for the Broncos, who will aim to rebound when they return to action Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. home match against Humboldt State.
In the first half Friday, the Seawolves outshot CPP 6-2. The best chance for either team likely came in the seventh minute, as SSU's Sara Studer threw the ball in along the right side to Edmonds. After a couple steps, Edmonds sent a quick pass into the box and although teammate Bree Robles had space and a good look at the goal, the ball rolled just beyond her reach.
Although the Broncos earned two corner kick opportunities through the first 45 minutes and finished with five of those chances overall to SSU's one, the host CPP squad couldn't get on the scoreboard.
About midway through the second half, a free kick from
Jennifer Rivera almost gave the Broncos a lead. Her boot found
Valerie Strawn cutting to the near post but Strawn's header sailed just to the left of the net.
In the 78th minute, the CPP attack put together another decent chance when
Callie Wilson sent a long pass along the right line to Strawn. A one-time pass from Strawn found
Justine Barclay but her acrobatic shot attempt was blocked away by a Seawolves' defender.
The visiting SSU squad found its score at the 85:26 mark with Edmonds charging into the box at the right time to meet Weaver's cross. The Seawolves' defense held off the later CPP chances and the final on the scoreboard went 1-0 in favor of SSU. Seawolves' goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua finished with two saves while recording the shutout.
