POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team came up with a tremendous defensive performance to top Cal State Monterey Bay, 3-1, Saturday night at Darlene May Gym.

“Shutting down their strong, powerful hitters helped out our back row a lot,” said senior outside hitter Ashley Marshman, who recorded career highs of 11 kills and seven blocks. “Closing blocks allowed our back row to take seams and have the passers where they need to be.”

The Broncos started out slow but came back to win game one by a wide margin of 11 points, 25-14.

The beginning of game two was no different as CPP was down early in the set and stayed behind for most of the game. CPP finally led 20-19 late in the game after Marshman's kill right through the seam of an Otters' block attempt. The Broncos shut down the Otters' offense to win the second set, 25-21.

Game three was a tough one. CPP outside hitter Diana Lake started the game strong with an ace but the Broncos continued their trend of slow starts. Once again though, the Broncos came back from behind to lead late in the game with two double blocks in a row by Marshman and junior middle blocker Taylr Kreutziger, who collected eight blocks - the highest single-match total for a CPP player this season.

The Broncos just couldn't hold on to their lead as the Otters pulled away to capture a 27-25 win in the third set.

“The pressure at the end got to us and Monterey Bay's passion and desire to win after losing the two sets was a big factor in our third game loss,” Marshman said.

The fourth frame started out shaky but the Broncos got into their groove with the help of the crowd as freshman outside hitter, Kyla White, recorded her first career kill to put CPP in the lead 7-5. A later kill from Lake started Kristin McNeese's seven-point serving streak to put the Broncos ahead 19-12. With a big kill from the center of the net by Kreutziger to end the game, the Broncos sent CSUMB packing to win the match 3-1.

Up next, the Broncos will try to win one on the road at Cal State L.A. Friday at 7 p.m.
