POMONA, Calif. - With a hat trick from
Luis Gonzalez and nearly the fastest consecutive goals in league history, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team cruised to a 5-1 home victory Sunday over Humboldt State.
Pairing the Kellogg Field result with Cal State Dominguez Hills' defeat of Cal State L.A., the Broncos' lead in the South Division race moves from one point to four points. CPP will host the third-place Toros and second-place Golden Eagles next weekend.
The 6-2 overall mark for the Broncos is the second-best start to a season in program history. In the 1984 campaign, CPP jumped out to a 6-1-1 record.
With those pivotal matchups lurking ahead, the Broncos certainly didn't overlook the visiting Lumberjacks Sunday. CPP scored all five of its goals within the first 17 minutes of the game. Gonzalez notched three scores while playing just 18 minutes Sunday, raising his season total of goals to a conference-best eight and his career total to 20 for a tie for fourth on the Broncos' all-time leaderboards.
Gonzalez and teammate
Fabian Perez almost made history for the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Their goals in the 17th minute were just 26 seconds apart. The conference record for fastest consecutive goals on the same team is 18 seconds, with Grand Canyon setting the mark on Nov. 2, 2001 against UC Davis.
Not to be outdone, the Broncos' first line of defense turned in a solid effort in holding the visiting HSU squad to just one shot through the first 45 minutes. The Jacks managed to get on the scoreboard at the 50:28 mark when Eric Baumgardner tapped in a rebound chance after an initial shot by Ray Lind.
All and all, it was the CPP offense that stole the show. Gonzalez scored just two minutes and 55 seconds into the contest, as he controlled a cross to drive home a shot from about five yards out.
Nicholas Jimenez and
Ricardo Reyes were credited with the assists.
The lead was stretched to 2-0 at the 10:44 mark when Gonzalez received a tremendous through ball from
Juan Mejia and then dribbled around HSU goalkeeper Kyle Verle to softly place a shot in the net. The scoreboard operator didn't get much rest, as
Jonathan Enns collected his second goal of 2011 at the 11:39 mark by burying a hard shot into the left corner of the net from 12 yards out after a pass from Perez.
Gonzalez and Perez got the Broncos' fourth and fifth goals in a similar fashion to the earlier ones. Quick passing through the middle of the Jacks' defense led the way to strong finishes by the CPP players on the attack.
In total, the Broncos outshot HSU 21-12. CPP goalkeeper
Andrew Todd earned his third-straight win in net while
Kris Minton played the second half and tallied three saves.
The Broncos stand at 6-2 overall and 5-1 in CCAA play, while the Jacks drop to 2-5 overall and 2-4 through league action.
