POMONA, Calif. - After suffering consecutive shutouts to UC San Diego and Sonoma State, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team rebounded Sunday with a shutout of its own against Humboldt State, 2-0.
The Broncos improved to 5-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play, while the Lumberjacks fall to 1-4-2 overall and 0-4-2 through league action. CPP is tied for third place in the South Division of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)
On Sunday, the HSU attack came close to taking the lead on two of their five first-half shots. In the eighth minute of play, sophomore midfielder Talya Crosby fired a shot off the crossbar from the right side of the box.
During the 25th minute, Broncos' sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Rohman punched the ball above the frame to prevent junior forward Tamra James' shot from reaching the back of the net.
The Broncos were able to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead when, in the 39th minute, senior midfielder
Jennifer Rivera stole the ball atop the 18 and ripped a shot to the bottom right corner of the net.
CPP managed to tack on an insurance score in the 69th minute. Upon receiving a pass up the left side from junior midfielder
Tiffany Rogers, junior defender
Angela Garcia took the ball into the box and shot over HSU freshman goalkeeper Amber Woolcock's head to give the Broncos their second goal.
Despite 13 total shots through the match, the Lumberjacks failed to get on the scoreboard. Another scoring opportunity for HSU occurred at the 78:50 mark of the second half when freshman defender Maddi Null overshot the net from eight yards out in a 2-on-1 opportunity.
Rohman recorded six saves to improve to 3-0-0 for the season, with Sunday's result being her first shutout of 2011 and sixth of her career.
Continuing their homestand, the Broncos take on South Division rivals Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., respectively.
