POMONA, Calif. - With a scoreless second half that featured chances from both teams equally, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team held off Colorado Mesa for a 2-1 victory in a Saturday afternoon contest.

“They were playing the same formation as us so it was easy for us to stay with our marks,” senior midfielder Jennifer Rivera said. “As soon as we got the ball, we started attacking and finding each other."

The Broncos improve to 2-0-0 overall while the visiting Mavericks dropped to 0-2-0.

Conference play begins for the Broncos next weekend with a pair of contests on the road, beginning with Cal State East Bay (0-1-0) on Friday and ending with San Francisco State (0-0-0) on Sunday.

“We have a really strong team,” Rivera said. “We have a lot of good freshmen that came in and transfers. We're ready to go. We've been training hard in these past three weeks. It's going to be a good season for us.”

The Broncos went into the half with a 2-1 lead, capped off by senior forward Valerie Strawn's tie-breaking goal off of Rivera's assist in the 21st minute of play.

“It was just a great experience,” Strawn said.  “It's always great to have a game-winning goal, but it was great to notice how we took what we do in practice and transitioned it into the game and it feels like everything's just clicking. It's a game winner, but it was like a team effort just getting it in there.”

Along with junior midfielder Cindy Paez, Rivera also set up senior defender Callie Wilson's goal, which got the Broncos on the board in the fifth minute.

The Mavericks tied the game, 1-1, when junior forward Kaselyn Butters scored unassisted in the eighth minute.

The Mavericks return home to play Dixie State (0-1-0) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
