POMONA, Calif. - Despite holding a 1-0 lead into the 89th minute Friday, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 draw after visiting Cal State L.A. struck for an equalizing score in the waning moments of regulation.
The Broncos, still maintaining first place in the conference's South Division, now hold marks of 6-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Golden Eagles of CSULA stand at 5-1-3 overall and 3-1-3 through league action.
The two squads played to a scoreless first half, with CPP outshooting the Golden Eagles 9-6. The visiting CSULA squad put together a solid chance in the 15th minute of action. The Golden Eagles' Jason Swope sent a corner kick into the box that found Taylor Rivas at the far post. The attempt ended up being saved by Broncos' goalkeeper
Andrew Todd.
CPP put together a stellar scoring opportunity of its own in the 29th minute of the first half. With
Luis Gonzalez taking a corner kick,
Ricardo Reyes was able to control the ball in the box. His hard shot from about 10 yards sailed just over the top of the net.
Although Broncos' head coach Lance Thompson sticking with his starters for much of the match, a key subsitution paid off in the second period. Senior midfielder
Nicholas Jimenez entered the contest for the Broncos at the 61:27 mark. Just one minute and 37 seconds later, he struck for a score on a free kick by placing the ball to the right of diving CSULA keeper Waleed Cassis from about 24 yards away.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, the Golden Eagles' offense picked up its intensity and used strong throw-in skills to create consistent chances in the box. Although CPP's advantage held up for much of the second half, CSULA found the equalizer at the 88:45 mark after a throw in by Osvaldo Lopez. The ball carried into the box and Rivas headed it past Todd to even the score.
With the match moving to overtime in the sudden victory format, both defenses held tough under pressure. The best opportunity for the squads offensively came with a little less than seven minutes remaining in the second overtime.
Jonathan Enns found Gonzalez slipping into the Golden Eagles' defensive box. Despite facing a tough angle, Gonzalez beat his defender and sent a hard shot toward the net. Sliding along the ground, Cassis stuck a hand up and stopped the shot to keep the match at 1-1.
In the end, Cassis totaled nine saves while Todd recorded five. The Broncos took eight corner kicks to CSULA's five.
Up next for CPP will be an 11:30 a.m. matchup Sunday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros of CSUDH have jumped into second place in the South Division after a 1-0 road win at San Francisco State Friday. CSUDH sits just three points behind the first-place Broncos.
