POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw Friday night against Cal State L.A., keeping the two squads tied in the conference's South Division standings.
Broncos' goalkeeper
Sarah Rohman collected 10 saves to help keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard for the final 41 minutes of the match. The sophomore netminder and the CPP defense got a bit of help from their goal frame, as two CSULA shots clanked off the post and the crossbar in the second overtime period.
The Broncos and Golden Eagles continue to hold matching marks at 5-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The host Broncos took an early 1-0 lead when
Angela Garcia struck for her third score of the season. Receiving a pass from
Jennifer Rivera along the left side, Garcia dribbled around her defender and launched a shot into the upper right corner of the net from about 20 yards away.
The CPP attack continued to put pressure on the Golden Eagles' defense through the rest of the first half and carried a 9-5 shot advantage into intermission. During the break, the Broncos replaced starting goalkeeper
Emily Miller with Rohman. Miller finished with 45 minutes of action and two saves.
The momentum swung the other way in the second period though, with CSULA outshooting the Broncos 15-4 through those 45 minutes.
The Golden Eagles found the equalizer at the 68:23 mark, when Ayana Younge rolled a cross into the box from the right corner. The ball bounced off a few players in the box and then Cari Gill slid in at the right moment to tap it into the net and even the score 1-1.
With the contest going into overtime, the Broncos stole a bit of the momentum back in the first 10-minute sudden victory frame. Six and a half minutes into extra time, a corner kick from Rivera bounced to the near post where
Justine Barclay flicked it further into the box. CPP's
Brittany Aldrich charged into a shot attempt but lifted it just over the bar.
Although the Golden Eagles outshot the Broncos 4-0 in the second overtime, including the post and crossbar shots, the two teams walked away with a point off the draw.
Up next for CPP will be a 2 p.m. matchup Sunday against Cal State Dominguez at Kellogg Field. The Toros of CSUDH (5-4-0, 3-4-0 CCAA) came away with a 1-0 road victory Friday at San Francisco State.
