PHOENIX, Ariz. - On the road Sunday in Arizona, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team came close to knocking off a tough Grand Canyon squad. With the temperature hovering around 100 degrees at game time, a 1-1 score at the end of regulation led to extra time.
As a light rain cooled off everyone involved, the host Antelopes were given a penalty kick opportunity in the 101st minute. Senior Nick Sykes converted the attempt, leaving the Broncos with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in a match that stretched to 11:17 p.m.
CPP goalkeeper
Kris Minton put together a solid performance in net for the visitors, registering eight saves. The Lopes, picked to repeat as champions of the Pacific West Conference, improve to 2-0. The Broncos fall to 1-1.
The host GCU squad applied early pressure in the first half, recording three shots in the first 12 minutes while holding the Broncos to zero attempts.
Liam Hall recorded CPP's first shot at 12:38 but Lopes' goalkeeper Adam Garcia managed to make the stop to keep the score 0-0. GCU broke through for the match's opening score, as senior Maximillian Aust tallied his first goal of the season in the 31st minute.
The Broncos earned four corner kicks in the first period as compared to the Lopes' one but nonetheless, the hosts carried the 1-0 lead into the second half.
While GCU outshot CPP 10-2 through the first 45 minutes, the Broncos began to pick up their attack intensity as the match progressed. The results arrived at 61:30 when
Luis Gonzalez knocked in a shot from the left side to tie up the score at 1-1. The assist on the play came from
Ricardo Reyes.
Gonzalez got a chance to put the Broncos ahead in the final minute of regulation but the attempt landed wide of the frame, moving the match into extra time.
The Lopes recorded four shots in the first overtime while CPP notched one. Two of GCU's attempts were blocked, one sailed high of the net and the other was saved by Minton to leave the score at 1-1. Just 36 seconds into the second overtime, a penalty kick was awarded to the host Lopes and Sykes sent the ball to the back of the net, ending an extended and exciting contest in Phoenix.
Up next for the Broncos will be the start of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play as they travel to play Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State next weekend.
