ARCATA, Calif. – The 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team faced a 10-point deficit at halftime Thursday at Humboldt State but the Broncos delivered with clutch shots late to top the Jacks in overtime, 83-79.
The uphill battle started with CPP committing 13 turnovers through the first 20 minutes. Amazingly, the Broncos didn't turn it over again for the final 25 minutes of play. In the end, the thrilling ending resulted in the 850th program win for CPP.
Four Broncos scored in double figures Thursday, highlighted by double-double performances from
Megan Ford and
Charlene Popoff.
J.J. Judge contributed a career-high 18 points, including three clutch free throws in the extra period. Joining those three in double figures was
Sarah Semenero, who sunk the game-tying three-pointer to force overtime.
The result pushes the Broncos into sole possession of third place in the conference standings, with the Broncos holding marks of 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The win also marks No. 850 in program history, which features five national championships.
The rebounding edge of 46-37 helped CPP late and Popoff grabbed seven of the team's 17 offensive boards. Ford's Thursday effort was her fifth-straight double-double night.
Freshman
Lisha Elsenbach, who entered the game with a career high in minutes of six, helped the Broncos eliminate the turnovers and contributed solid defense. The Burbank, Calif., native finished with 16 minutes, two points and three assists. Also playing a key role Thursday was junior
Jennifer Bryant, who went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the extra period.
Although the Broncos traded leads with the Jacks for much of the first half and only trailed 19-16 with six minutes to play in the period, HSU raced into the break on a 16-6 run.
With the Broncos down 61-56 with under five minutes left in regulation, Judge connected for eight-straight points to pull CPP within just one point. Facing a three-point hole with just 30 seconds to go, Semenero sunk a three-pointer to even the score at 69-69 and push the game into overtime.
Despite HSU jumping out to a three-point lead to start overtime, a pair of free throws by Semenero set up a go-ahead jumper from Judge. From that point on, CPP never trailed again.
Up next for the Broncos will be a 5:30 p.m. matchup Saturday at Sonoma State.
