ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Facing a 15-point deficit with just four minutes to play Saturday at Sonoma State, the 10th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team managed to stage a dramatic run to make it a one-possession game. The late push proved to be too little and late though, as the host Seawolves held on for the 70-64 victory.
The result drops the Broncos to 9-3 overall and 6-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while evening the SSU marks at 7-7 overall and 5-5 through league action. CPP has suffered three losses in its last four games.
Two nights after setting a new career high in points with 16, Broncos' sophomore guard
Terrence Drisdom contributed 15 points and nine rebounds against the Seawolves. Senior forward
Dwayne Fells matched his season high in points by tallying 15 Saturday.
The Broncos started slow Saturday, getting outrebounded 19-13 and committing eight turnovers in the first half. The Seawolves built a double-digit lead less than eight minutes into the period and leading the way were Patrick Scott and Will Olsem, who combined for 17 of the team's 37 points for that half.
CPP managed to close the gap to 23-21 when junior guard
Mitchel Anderson knocked down a three-point attempt at the 7:03 mark but SSU rallied to finish the period on a 14-4 spurt to lead by 12 points at the break.
Scott and Olsem continued their three-point barrage in the second half, sinking one attempt each in the first minute of the period to extend the Seawolves' edge to 17.
SSU took a 15-point advantage into the final four minutes of regulation but the momentum quickly turned in CPP's favor as the Broncos applied a frenetic full-court defense.
As the Seawolves' turnover total increased steadily, the CPP highlights in the spurt featured a dunk from Drisdom and a long three-pointer by
Bryce Brady. The trey from Brady cut the SSU edge to three and after the Seawolves dropped in a layup, Drisdom hit a pair of free throws to get the difference back to three again.
SSU continued to hit its free throw attempts though, firing in 20 of the team's 25 attempts at the strike to hold off the thrilling Broncos' run. Through the 40 minutes of action, the Seawolves outrebounded CPP by a margin of 38-25.
The Broncos will now return home to host San Francisco State Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
