ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Behind a career-high 14 points by
Jennifer Bryant, the 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team secured a 52-50 road victory Saturday at Sonoma State.
Joining Bryant in double figures were Sonoma County natives
Sarah Semenero and
Charlene Popoff, with that pair finishing at point totals of 12 and 10 respectively. The result pushes the Broncos' marks to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
The Broncos opened the game on a 6-0 run, courtesy of two three-pointers from Bryant. The Seawolves countered with a 13-0 spurt of their own, as that stretch featured six points by Kristina Fahey.
CPP rallied back later in the period, closing out the opening half on a 9-2 run as the Broncos ended up forcing 12 SSU turnovers through the first 20 minutes. Semenero connected for five points in the final 90 seconds of the period.
Although CPP took a 21-20 edge into intermission, the Seawolves stole it back momentarily early in the second period. Five-straight points from
Rosslyn Beard helped the Broncos build a four-point cushion.
Not much later, Bryant and Semenero added three-pointers to stretch the advantage to a game-high 10 at 34-24 with about 13 minutes to play.
After SSU managed to cut the difference to just three with 4:05 remaining, Bryant and Semenero continued to fuel the CPP attack. The Broncos sunk their final four free throw attempts to keep their advantage to the final buzzer, which coincided with a successful halfcourt shot by Seawolves' senior Jaclyn Bisordi to bring the final score to 52-50.
CPP ended up going 8-for-18 from beyond the arc, which made up for the fact that the Broncos shot almost the same percentage - 10-for-22 - at the free throw line.
Beard, playing in her 99th career game as a Bronco, finished with eight points and two assists. The streak of five-consecutive double-double performances from
Megan Ford came to an end, as the senior center was held to six points and three rebounds.
The Broncos will return home to host San Francisco State Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. conference matchup. The Gators dropped a 66-61 decision at Humboldt State Saturday.
