CARSON, Calif. - The 20th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team took a four-point lead into the second half Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills but the Toros elevated their offensive game in the final minutes to secure a dramatic 64-59 win.

The result drops the Broncos' marks to 10-4 overall and 7-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as CPP is now in a five-team tie for second place in the conference standings. One of those teams is CSUDH, holding records of 8-5 overall and 7-4 through league play.

Broncos' guard DeRonn Scott tallied a team-high 14 points, with all of them coming in the first half. Teammate Mitchel Anderson contributed 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting.

Free-throw shooting continued to plague CPP, as the team went 10-for-17 at the strike.

Both offenses struggled early on and the Toros slowly progressed to a 5-0 lead while holding a general advantage through the first seven minutes of action. The stellar shooting of Scott helped the Broncos pull even at 7-7 and the seesaw nature continued for the remainder of the opening period.

After Dwayne Fells dropped in a layup to extend CPP's margin to 25-22 with two minutes left before the break, CSUDH's Wayne Andrews fired in a jumper on the next possession to get the difference back to win.

A long three-point conversion from Scott just before the halftime buzzer sounded brought the lead back to four for the Broncos, 28-24. That CPP momentum carried over through the first seven minutes or so of the second half, a span that inclued a three-pointer by Anderson that got the Broncos' lead into double digits with 17:23 to play.

A 9-0 run for the Toros leading up to the midway point of the half gave all of the momentum back to the hosts though, with that stretch getting capped off by an offensive rebound tip-in from George McGrew. By the end of the night, McGrew and Robert Wilhite each posted 5-for-7 shooting performances to lead an efficient CSUDH offense in the second half.

The Toros kicked their lead up to nine as late as the 2:45 mark but CPP managed to get it back down to a one-possession game after Matt Rosser knocked down a three-pointer with 15 seconds to play. CSUDH's Cornell Jenkins sunk a pair of free throws in the waning moments to lock up the five-point victory.

Up next for the Broncos will be a 7:30 p.m. matchup Saturday at Cal State L.A.
