LOS ANGELES - The 20th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team picked up an impressive 59-49 road win Saturday at Cal State L.A., as the Broncos held the Golden Eagles scoreless for a six-minute stretch late in the second half.
Saturday's matchup at the Eagles' Nest featured two of the nation's top defenses, with the Golden Eagles ranked third and the Broncos holding opponents to the fifth-lowest scoring average.
The win puts the CPP squad at 11-4 overall and 8-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With Cal State San Bernardino falling to Sonoma State Saturday, the conference standings now feature the Broncos locked in a five-team tie for first place.
Leading CPP Saturday on offense was
DeRonn Scott, who posted a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds. Despite holding a season free-throw percentage of 64.3 percent going into the contest, Scott knocked down seven of his eight attempts at CSULA.
As far as the team performance for the Broncos, the difference makers were turnovers and defense. CPP committed just nine turnovers and kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard between the 6:35 and 0:40 marks of the second half. Saturday's game was the sixth time this season that the Broncos had kept their turnover mark in single digits but just the first instance of the 2012 calendar year.
In the first half, the score moved to a tie on seven different occasions, including a 24-24 tally going into the break. The largest spread in those 20 minutes came when Scott knocked down a three-pointer to put CPP ahead 22-17 with 6:08 to play in the period.
The Golden Eagles held a drastic 21-10 rebounding edge in the first half but the Broncos helped overcome that mark by only committing four turnovers and forcing 10 from the CSULA offense.
The Golden Eagles' Quinton Watkins tied the game at 47-47 with 6:53 to play in the second half but for the remainder of the contest, it was all Broncos. CPP went 12-2 down that final stretch.
With a large contingent of Bronco fans in attendance, including the Cal Poly Pomona Pep Band, the loudest applause of the night came when
Matt Rosser threw down a slam dunk late in the second half after a
Mitchel Anderson three-point miss just started to roll off the rim.
Anderson and
Tyquan Brown joined Scott in double figures for the Broncos with point totals of 12 and 10 respectively. Freshman guard
Daniel Rodriguez played a stellar game on both the offensive and defensive ends, as he finished with a season-high seven points. Rodriguez sunk two three-point atttempts and both ended up breaking up tie scores.
Up next for the Broncos will be a 7:30 p.m. home matchup on Thursday against UC San Diego.
