LOS ANGELES – Sarah Semenero led the 17th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team on a late scoring run Saturday at Cal State L.A. but the Broncos couldn't overcome a 19-point halftime deficit, ultimately suffering a 75-65 loss.
The Broncos fall to 12-4 overall and 8-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while the Golden Eagles pass CPP in the standings with marks of 11-5 overall and 9-3 through league action.
Semenero collected a career-high 23 points, which included 17 in the closing period. She also contributed nine rebounds, two assists and a steal.
CSULA stumbled at the free throw line through the final 20 minutes, going 13-for-22 at the strike in that span. Through that same stretch, the Broncos went a perfect 10-for-10 at the line.
The host Golden Eagles rattled off an 8-0 run to start Saturday's contest. A successful jumper from CPP's
Jade Khuri brought the difference back to four at the 16:03 mark but after that, the CSULA offense continued to pick up its intensity.
Led by six three-pointers through the first 20 minutes, the Golden Eagles went 15-for-27 from the floor for a shooting percentage of 55.6. Lacy Ramon and Erika Ruiz paced CSULA with two treys apiece.
The Broncos did take advantage of their free throws in the opening half, going 9-for-12 at the line led by a perfect 4-for-4 showing from
Megan Ford.
Despite trailing by 17 points with 3:30 remaining in regulation, CPP posted an 11-0 run to make things interesting and cut the spread to just six. Semenero recorded seven of those 11 points in the spurt.
The Golden Eagles managed to slow down the Broncos in the final minute though, holding on for the 10-point victory. Ramon paced the CSULA attack through Saturday's contest, registering a double-double performance of 26 points and 10 rebounds.
Up next for CPP will be a Thursday matchup at Kellogg Gym against No. 1-ranked UC San Diego.
