POMONA, Calif. - Mitchel Anderson scored a career-high 25 points Thursday, leading the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team to a 58-50 victory over UC San Diego.
The result keeps the Broncos in a tie for first place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.
With only two games on the schedule Thursday, CPP is tied with just one other team - Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes visit Kellogg Gym Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. showdown.
The Broncos shot 59.5 percent from the floor Thursday, an effort highlighted by Anderson's 9-for-13 performance. Senior forward
Tyquan Brown also impressed the Kellogg Gym crowd with three blocks on the evening.
Although UCSD got on the scoreboard first, CPP countered and steadily built up an advantage of its own. A layup from Brown around the midway point in the opening half extended the Broncos' edge to 20-10.
The margin reached as high as 13 in the first period but the Tritons knocked down late free throws to settle the halftime score at 33-26. On the night, UCSD went 19-for-22 at the strike, including 9-for-9 efforts from both Tyler McGrath and James McCann.
The Broncos got off to a strong start in the second half, stretching the lead to 14 when Brown dropped in another layup. Later in the period though, CPP fell into an eight-minute scoring drought. With stellar defense though, the Broncos stopped the Tritons from making it a one-possession contest.
Offensive rebounds combined with a late steal from
Terrence Drisdom and another block by Brown forced UCSD to continue to foul. The Broncos knocked down their final three free-throw attempts, including two from Anderson and one from Drisdom. Anderson finished with a 5-for-5 performance at the strike.
The CPP defense held the visiting Tritons to just 27.7-percent shooting from the field. UCSD knocked down just five of their 23 three-point attempts.
Drisdom finished with 10 points to join Anderson in double figures. Off the bench for the Broncos,
DeRonn Scott added eight points on 3-for-5 shooting.
Up next for CPP will be the 7:30 p.m. Saturday matchup against Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes improved their CCAA record to 9-4 with a win over San Francisco State Thursday.
