POMONA, Calif. – With
Megan Ford leading the way once again, the 11th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team defeated Cal State East Bay Thursday, 71-50.
With the result, the Broncos now stand at 9-1 overall and 5-1 through California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Thursday's victory marks the 18th-straight at Kellogg Gym for CPP and career coaching win No. 175 for Broncos' second-year head coach
Danelle Bishop.
Ford collected 18 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks en route to career double-double No. 15. Also in double figures for the Broncos were
Charlene Popoff with 14 and
Mian Dingle with 12 points of her own.
With just more than 10 minutes passed in the first half, CPP had already opened up a double-digit lead as a Ford layup started a 6-0 run that ended with a jumper from Dingle after an assist by
Ariel Marsh. The stellar opening period for the Broncos continued, as the hosts stretched their edge to as many as 22 with
Rosslyn Beard knocking down a pair of free throws just before intermission.
CPP used a drastic rebounding advantage, 45-31, in building its early lead. Of the 13 Broncos that played Thursday, 12 grabbed at least one rebound.
Despite the Pioneers playing tougher in the second half, the visiting CSUEB squad only got as close as 12 when Brianna Terrance sunk a free throw to make it 43-31 in favor of CPP with 17:14 remaining. Terrance finished with a team-high 14 points to pace the Pioneers.
The Broncos' lead didn't fluctuate much after the 12-minute mark in the second half, as the margin bounced between 18 and 22 through that span. Popoff scored eight of her 14 points during the final 20 minutes and added two steals on the night while shooting 7-for-11 from the floor.
In addition to Dingle's new personal benchmark in points, she also shined in rebounds with four and free-throw shooting with a 6-for-6 effort.
Up next for the Broncos will be a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Cal State Monterey Bay at Kellogg Gym. The Otters defeated San Francisco State Thursday to remain undefeated in CCAA play.
