POMONA, Calif. - With tenacious defense and aggressiveness on the offensive boards, the sixth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team secured a 66-39 defeat of Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday in front of a boisterous crowd at Kellogg Gym.

The Broncos improve to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action, with the victory keeping CPP in sole possession of first place. The visiting Otters meanwhile fall to 2-9 overall and 1-6 through league play.

All 11 Broncos got in the game Saturday and all 11 scored. Mitchel Anderson led the balanced attack with 15 points and nine rebounds.

CPP collected 14 steals as a team, while Anderson tallied four of his own. Tyquan Brown picked up another three blocks, raising his season total to 12. All of the defensive effort contributed to CSUMB recording just 39 points, the lowest for a Broncos' opponent so far this season.

CPP guard Bryce Brady opened up the scoring Saturday with a three-pointer as the Broncos steadily built a 12-2 advantage through the opening nine minutes. The host's defense managed to keep the Otters in single digits during the first 13 minutes and the halftime lead settled at 28-15 in favor of CPP after a jumper from DeRonn Scott, who ended the night with 12 points to join Anderson in double figures.

Anderson caught fire in the second half, scoring 11 of his 15 points during a 14-0 run through the early part of the closing period. Although CSUMB cut the Broncos' lead to nine, 28-18, with about 1:20 played in the second half, CPP rattled off that spurt over the next four minutes. Anderson knocked down two treys, two jumpers and a free throw to help push the Broncos' edge to 23.

Offensive rebounds helped the Broncos overcome a shooting percentage of 37.9 percent, as CPP recorded 44 rebounds with 15 coming on the offensive end. The Broncos shot better from three-point range than two-point range, knocking down seven of their 17 attempts from beyond the arc. Freshman Daniel Rodriguez tied Anderson for the team lead in treys with two.

Overall in rebounding, CPP held a 44-37 advantage. Joining Anderson with nine rebounds was Andrew Steel, who reached a season high in that category.

Up next for the Broncos will be a road trip to Northern California, with the first contest coming at Humboldt State Thursday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. between CPP and the Lumberjacks, who defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday.
