POMONA, Calif. – With neither team leading by more than six points Saturday, everyone knew the showdown between Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay would come down to a dramatic finish.
In the end though it went the Otters' way, with late three-pointers from Stefanie Corgel and Erika Ward propelling the visitors to a 51-48 victory. The result drops the Broncos to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, while also snapping the team's 18-game home winning streak.
Broncos' senior center
Megan Ford, despite a tough shooting night from the floor, sunk eight free throws en route to her sixth double-double performance of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
While CPP struggled in its shooting from the field at 25.5 percent on the night, the Otters' woes wered tied to free-throw shooting as CSUMB went just 5-for-16 at the line.
The Broncos built up a small lead as the first half progressed, pushing their edge to a high of six when
Charlene Popoff dropped in a layup with 8:32 left in the period. The Otters countered with an 8-0 run led by Shonetta Crain-Williams, who finished with a double-double effort of 14 points and 12 rebounds. CSUMB took a one-point lead, 26-25, into halftime.
The Otters extended their advantage to five when Ward knocked down a trey at the 16:33 mark in the second half. The CPP attack came alive though after that shot, with the hosts reeling off a 9-0 run that featured four points from Ford and three points by
Rosslyn Beard. The Broncos held a 42-38 edge with about six minutes to play but CSUMB rallied to close the game on a 13-6 stretch, with Corgel and Ward firing in the key three-point attempts.
Semenero joined Ford in double figures with 13 points, including a 6-for-7 showing at the free throw line. The Broncos racked up 10 steals on the night, led by Semenero's three.
Up next for CPP will be a road trip to Northern California with stops at Humboldt State and Sonoma State next week.
