CHICO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team played even with the North Division's best team through 74 minutes Friday but a flurry of late goals led to a 2-1 loss for the Broncos at Chico State.

The result keeps CPP winless through the first three games of this four-game road stretch but the Broncos will look to bounce back Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. match at Cal State Stanislaus.

CPP now stands at 3-7-2 overall and 1-7-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the CSUC Wildcats improve to 6-2-1 in league action to keep their first-place lead.

Despite CSUC outshooting the Broncos, 16-6, neither team put many attempts on target Friday night. The Wildcats finished with four shots on goal while CPP totaled two.

Akwafei Ajeakwa broke the scoreless tie at the 74:16 mark when he tapped in a short shot from the far post after a long throw-in assist by Sean Gallagher.

Less than two minutes later, a Chico State corner kick led to an initial header before Micah Miranda knocked in a rebound chance to push the Wildcats' lead to 2-0. The host squad finished with eight corner kick opportunities as compared to the Broncos' one.

CPP broke through for a score of its own in the 85th minute when a long throw-in from Jesus Mitre caused a bit of chaos in the Wildcats' defensive box.

After Justyn Peeples deflected the ball, Christopher Rosales placed a shot past CSUC netminder Sam Evans to pull the visitors back to within a one-goal differential. For Rosales, who ranks within the top 10 in the conference for assists, it was his first career goal as a Bronco.

From that point forward though, the Wildcats' defense held tough to preserve the 2-1 victory.

For Broncos' senior goalkeeper Kris Minton, it marked the first game of 2012 that he had allowed more than one goal in a game. Entering the week, Evans and Minton ranked fourth and sixth respectively in the CCAA for goals against average.
