SAN FRANCISCO – Late in Saturday's fourth game between Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State, the host Gators' squad threatened to complete its comeback from a 2-0 deficit.
With SFSU tying that fourth game at 20-20, a fifth and deciding frame remained a real possibility.
Broncos' freshman outside hitter
Brianna Thierjung stepped up with a clutch offensive performance and helped the visitors seize back the momentum, delivering three kills in the final five points to lift CPP to an impressive 3-1 road win.
Thierjung, a Corona native, totaled 11 kills in Saturday's match to nearly double her previous season high for that statistic. She also added six digs and a solo block.
The result handed the second-place Gators (8-3) just their second home loss of 2012. Meanwhile, the Broncos (5-6) rise to eighth place in the conference standings with the victory capping off a two-match road trip to Northern California.
Jessica Doerner and
Alexa Hasen also starred on the CPP attack Saturday with 13 kills apiece. Doerner played well defensively too as she added 12 digs. Hasen hit effectively with a team-best .440 attack percentage.
After totaling just three blocks in Friday's 3-0 loss at Sonoma State, the Broncos bounced back with an 11-block performance Saturday.
Lauren Jones and
Taylr Kreutziger led the way with block totals of six and five respectively.
Katie Colin put together a strong all-around performance, dishing out 17 assists and collecting 13 digs.
The road victory is even more impressive considering that CPP fell into a 7-1 deficit to start the match. The Broncos steadily chipped away at that first-game lead and with the scored tied at 23-23, Hasen and
Nicoletta Stork provided kills on the next two points.
CPP showed its resiliency in the second game as well, securing a key late point in a closely-contested frame with a combined block from Kreutziger and Doerner. The third game featured a long serving run from Jones but the early Broncos' lead vanished with a late surge from the Gators, who took that frame by a score of 25-19.
The fourth and final game included 14 different occasions of the score being tied, until Thierjung and the CPP offense took over after the 20-20 mark. Now with a victory to end the road trip, the Broncos will return home to host Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday at 7 p.m.
