POMONA, Calif. – With a balanced attack and scrappy defense, the Cal Poly Pomona women's volleyball team captured a 3-0 home sweep of Cal State Stanislaus Thursday.
The result completes a Broncos' sweep of the season series, which features two 3-0 victories for CPP. The eighth-place Broncos move to .500 in conference play at 6-6, keeping pace with the rest of the teams and moving to within one win of fourth place.
It also marks the first conference home sweep this year for the Broncos, who now hold a two-matching winning streak heading into a Saturday 7 p.m. contest against Chico State at Kellogg Gym.
Saturday will also be CPP's annual "Dig for the Cure" match with the university community and the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) working together to support breast cancer awareness and research. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and there will be t-shirt sales that'll bring in donations for local cancer awareness centers.
Brianna Thierjung and
Jessica Doerner paced the Broncos in kills Thursday with nine apiece. As a team, CPP hit .326 with
Nicoletta Stork's .625 and
Alexa Hasen's .545 leading the way in efficiency. The Broncos collected 45 digs as a team while Stanislaus totaled just 33.
The visiting Warriors made the Broncos work for each game though, especially in the first when CPP took the frame by a 26-24 score. After the Broncos took a 23-19 lead, the Stanislaus squad rattled off five-straight points to get game point at 24-23. After a Warriors' service error, senior middle blocker
Taylr Kreutziger provided back-to-back kills to lift CPP to the first-game win.
Stanislaus built up a 14-8 lead in the second game before Broncos came storming back with Stork serving. At that point, CPP got a 5-0 run that featured an ace from Stork, a key kill by
Lauren Jones and block assists from Doerner and Kreutziger. With game point at 24-23, Doerner slammed home a kill off an assist from
Katie Colin. Colin, a junior setter from Torrance, finished with a team-high 20 assists Thursday.
By the time the two teams became tied 9-9 in the third game, that frame had already featured nine different tie scores. The Broncos took control in the later portion of the game though as senior libero
Kelly Bonja provided a long serving run, which even featured her eighth career kill. Stork collected a kill on the final point of the match and finished with five kills on the night.
