POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona's
Jessica Doerner put together a spectacular performance of 17 kills and 20 digs Saturday but the rest of the Broncos' offense fell relatively quiet in a 3-1 home loss to Chico State.
The Broncos fall back to .500 overall at 10-10 while moving to 6-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Meanwhile, the Wildcats improve to 14-6 overall and 8-5 in league play.
Doerner's Saturday totals of 17 kills and 20 digs represent career bests and through the four games Saturday, she committed just three attack errors for a hitting percentage of .400.
On the opposite side of the court, Chico's attack featured four players with double-digit kill totals by the end of the night.
The first game included plenty of momentum shifts, starting with CPP's 4-0 run to start the match while
Kelly Bonja served. The Wildcats rattled off six-straight points a bit later in the game, turning a 7-4 deficit into a 9-7 lead.
Chico held a 24-22 edge but the Broncos staged a late rally to capture the 26-24 result. That final spurt featured kills from
Nicoletta Stork and Doerner along with a service ace by
Alexa Hasen. Also of note Saturday, Hasen led the team in blocks while Stork paced the squad in assists.
The second game also featured plenty of exciting rallies but this time, Chico came through in the clutch late. With the score tied 22-22, the Wildcats got two kills and a solo block from Alex Shurtz to close out the 25-22 win. Shurtz ended up leading the visitors in kills with 16 Saturday.
That momentum continued into the third game, when Chico rolled to a 25-15 victory. CPP started off the fourth game strong, getting out to a 6-2 advantage as Stork put in some nice services and Doerner continued to excel on the attack.
The Wildcats evened the tally at 9-9 and the rest of the game would include seven more tie scores. In the end, Chico's balanced offense lifted the visitors to a 25-22 win in that final frame.
CPP will now take to the road next weekend with away matches at Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego.
