POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team gave up two early goals Friday to Cal State Dominguez Hills and despite the Broncos getting their fair share of scoring chances, the early deficit led to a 3-0 loss to the Toros.
The result secures a spot in the conference tournament for the Toros, who improved to 10-5-1 overall and 10-4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action. Meanwhile, the Broncos fall to 3-10-3 overall and 1-10-3 in league action.
CPP will look to close out the season on a high note Sunday with an 11:30 a.m. home game against Cal State L.A. It'll be "Senior Day" at Kellogg Field with the Broncos honoring their five senior student-athletes in a pregame ceremony.
The visiting Dominguez Hills squad scored two goals in the eighth minute to stake an early 2-0 edge. At the 7:04 mark, Tony Alfaro bent a free kick from about 20 yards out into the upper left corner of the net past CPP starting goalkeeper
Anthony Iniguez.
Less than a minute later, a Broncos' defender tripped a Toros' forward in the box to give the visitors a penalty kick opportunity. Jio Santana converted to record his fifth goal of 2012 and put Dominguez ahead 2-0.
The CPP offense also created some chances in the first half. In the 33rd minute, Broncos' senior midfielder
Abraham Gomez sent a solid free kick toward the net but Toros' netminder Trey Mitchell slid to the side to make the stop. Later in the half, freshman
Matt Wright tossed a long throw-in into the box but a header from sophomore
Cory Hodge sailed over the crossbar.
The Toros added a third score just before the halftime horn sounded. Aaron Salazar slipped a through ball up to Sebastian Cortez, who placed a shot past Iniguez with eight seconds left in the period.
Senior goalkeeper
Kris Minton stepped into the action in the second half for the Broncos and he joined the CPP defense in holding Dominguez Hills scoreless through those final 45 minutes. In the 54th minute, Christian Soto bent a hard shot in from the right corner but Minton leapt to tip the ball over the bar and keep the score at 3-0.
At the conclusion of Friday's match, the Toros held a slight 16-15 shot advantage over the Broncos. Of note, Minton's 2012 goals against average dropped to 0.84. The program record for a single season is 0.94, a mark set in 1998 by Brendan Schwarz.
