POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team demonstrated plenty of resiliency Sunday against Cal State L.A. as the Broncos battled back to tie the score twice after falling into an early deficit.
The regular season finale at Kellogg Field featured several spectacular plays on offense for both the Broncos and Golden Eagles but in the end, the visiting L.A. squad picked up a 3-2 victory to capture the South Division title.
CPP finished the 2012 campaign at 3-11-3 overall and 1-11-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play.
Prior to Sunday's match, the Broncos honored five seniors:
David Carrillo,
Abraham Gomez,
Liam Hall,
Anthony Iniguez and
Kris Minton. To view a video of the ceremony,

The Golden Eagles got on the board first Sunday after Antti Arvola initiated the play with a free kick from the right side. The ball was deflected over to Andy Lopez, who sent a short pass to Halil Tozar. After a small dribble, Tozar lifted a shot past Minton to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
In one of many slick counter attacks during the match, the Broncos got an equalizing score at the 41:59 mark. Gomez sent a pass up to
Michael Torres, who took a shot that ended up being blocked by a CSULA defender. The ball deflected to freshman
Matt Wright, who quickly fired a shot past Golden Eagles' goalkeeper Waleed Cassis.
The 1-1 score held up through until halftime. With a goalkeeper chance for the Broncos as Iniguez entered the match, Minton ended his 2012 season with a goals against average of 0.89. That set a new program record with the previous best set at 0.94 in 1998 by Brendan Schwarz.
The Golden Eagles got a counter of their own in the 66th minute and converted on the chance to take a 2-1 lead. Rosario Bras started the play by stealing the ball away from CPP around midfield and then sent a through ball up to Tozar to set up a breakaway. Tozar didn't waste time in getting a shot past Iniguez to give L.A. the lead once again.
The offensive pressure from the Broncos didn't lighten up though and it paid off at the 72:29 mark in the form of another equalizer. As Cassis exited the 18-yard box to try to clear the bouncing ball, CPP freshman
Tony Bichai arrived to the ball at that same moment as well. It caromed back to
Brandon Cortez, who lifted a long-distance shot over a pair of L.A. defenders into the empty net.
The game crawled closer and closer to overtime but the Golden Eagles managed to tack on their third goal of the match with about five and a half minutes to play. A pair of quick passes from Tozar and Erik Vargas led to a header chance for Bras, who sent the attempt to the right of Iniguez for the eventual game winner.
