POMONA, Calif. –  Facing a 2-1 deficit Thursday on "Pack the Gym" night, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team rallied to force a fifth and deciding game.

With the crowd of 703 on edge, the visiting Golden Eagles' blocking prowess pushed them to a 15-7 result in that final frame to secure the 3-2 victory at Kellogg Gym.

The loss drops CPP to marks of 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Meanwhile, CSULA moves above the Broncos in the standings at 6-9 overall and 4-4 in league action.

Despite the defeat, the CPP performance featured plenty of individual highlights. Diana Lake and Jessica Doerner led the team in kills with 15 and 14, while Lauren Jones and Alexa Hasen proved to be the most efficient on the attack.

Hasen, a freshman from Huntington Beach, totaled nine kills and committed zero attack errors. It marked the fifth time this season that she recorded a hitting percentage of .500 or better.

Senior libero Kelly Bonja collected 30 digs in Thursday's match as the Broncos outshined the visitors in that category, 83-61. The San Dimas native is now just 16 digs away from moving into the No. 3 spot all-time for digs in the Broncos' record book.

The difference maker in Thursday's match could have certainly been in the blocking area. The Golden Eagles racked up 30 block assists, including nine apiece from Loreal Carter and Reanna Hill. The Broncos finished with eight, as Taylr Kreutziger paced CPP with three.

CSULA registered 16 kills to just one error in the first game, rolling to a 25-17 result with Hill earning two service aces in a late rally. The Broncos stole the momentum away in the second frame, hitting .424 as Doerner collected six kills in the final 10 points of the game to carry the CPP offense.

The third game proved to be the most closely contested, as the teams tied the score on 19 different occasions. Attack and service errors got the best of the Broncos late in the frame though, as a 24-24 tie turned into a 26-24 win for the Golden Eagles as a block closed out the game.

In the fourth game, CPP once again battled back. Starting at 6-6, Kreutziger served the Broncos to a 6-0 run with that spurt featuring key kills from Hasen, Lake and Doerner. That stretch proved to be critical as CPP went on to record a 25-22 win. The visiting CSULA squad came through in the clutch though, taking a 15-7 victory in the last frame behind 12 fifth-game block assists.

The Broncos will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. home match against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
