LOS ANGELES – Looking to go undefeated for the third-consecutive game, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback Friday at Cal State L.A.
Despite facing a 1-0 deficit at halftime, the Broncos rallied for an equalizing score early in the second period. The CSULA squad countered with a goal of its own though, getting the game winner in the 79th minute.
The result drops CPP to 3-5-2 overall and 1-5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Golden Eagles, defending CCAA and West Region champs, improve to 7-3-1 overall and 6-2-1 through league play.
Junior goalkeeper
Andrew Todd got the start in net for the Broncos and he was tested early as CSULA earned five corner kick opportunities through the first 11 minutes of play Friday.
The Golden Eagles broke through for a score in the 25th minute when Antti Arvola assisted Adam Hughes on a score, the first for Hughes in 2012. Into halftime, CSULA held the 1-0 lead and a 6-2 advantage in shots.
The CPP attack increased its intensity in the second period and the visitors landed a score at the 47:51 mark. After connecting passes from
Abraham Gomez and
David Carrillo, freshman
Matt Wright knocked in the goal on a jumping half volley. It marked the first career score for the San Diego native.
With the game now tied, the cautions started to accumulate for the Broncos. One in particular proved to be costly, with CPP getting a yellow card at 78:09. On the resulting free kick, Arvola sent the attempt into the upper right corner to push the Golden Eagles' edge to 2-1.
The CSULA defense remained tough as well, holding CPP without a shot through the final 18 minutes of play.
The Broncos will return to action with a 2 p.m. match Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
