POMONA, Calif. –  With another intense five-game match on the line, seniors Kelly Bonja and Diana Lake made sure that Cal Poly Pomona walked away victorious.

Saturday's match at Kellogg Gym between the Broncos and Cal State Dominguez Hills brought out the best in both squads and the score rested at 13-13 in the fifth and final game.

Bonja served the Broncos onto victory with CPP getting its final point on a kill by Lake. The win took an entire team effort as the visiting Toros battled back from a 2-1 deficit and held an 11-8 edge in the final frame.

Three Broncos finished with double-digit kills as Lake led the way with 16 of her own. Alexa Hasen and Lauren Jones contributed 13 apiece.

CPP now holds marks of 8-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the visiting CSUDH squad drops to 7-9 overall and 5-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Bonja collected 28 digs Saturday and with that total, moved into third place all-time in the Broncos' record book. With 1,096 digs in her CPP career, Bonja only trails Kiting Kolar (1,517 from 2004 through 2007) and Nikki Egilske (1,261 from 1991 through 1994).

Although the attendance total of 578 isn't the largest of the season for the Broncos, Saturday's crowd certainly wins the award for loudest. With many members of The Herd in attendance along with fourth- and fifth-grade visitors from Diamond Bar's Quail Summit Elementary School, Kellogg Gym was buzzing with excitement.

The Broncos and Toros gave them plenty of exciting volleyball to watch, with CPP taking the first and third games and CSUDH securing wins in the second and fourth frames.

In the first game, the Broncos got off to a 5-0 start with strong serving from Jessica Doerner. CPP established its blocking game early as well, even getting three-straight putbacks during a single rally to stifle the Toros' attack. The Broncos finished the night with 24 block assists, including six apiece from Taylr Kreutziger, Nicoletta Stork and Hasen.

After CPP took the first game 25-20, the Toros rallied to secure a 25-23 win the second frame. Both teams traded points in the later stages of that second game but CSUDH's lead established in the middle of the frame held up.

Despite falling behind 6-0 in the third game, the Broncos staged a tremendous rally to seize control of the momentum. Jones took over the serve with CPP down 8-7 but led the host squad on a 7-0 run that began with a service ace. Hasen provided two kills and a block assist in that stretch before the Broncos eventually won the game, 25-17.

Elizabeth Krieger guided the Toros' offense in the fourth game, totaling five kills in that frame to help the visitors even the score at 2-2. The deciding game proved to be just as closely-contested as the rest of the match and in that fifth game, the teams pushed the score into a tie on eight different occasions.

The 15-13 result in favor of CPP was certainly a team effort, while Bonja and Lake provided the finishing touches on a thrilling win for the Broncos.
