CARSON, Calif. – After falling into a 3-0 deficit in Sunday's match at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team staged a second-half rally before the score settled at 4-2 in favor of the host Toros.
The result leaves the Broncos still searching for their first road win of 2012 as CPP holds a mark of 0-4-1 away from Kellogg Field. The Broncos are 3-6-2 overall and 1-6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Toros extended their win streak to three and now are 6-4-0 in league play.
CPP senior goalkeeper
Anthony Iniguez earned his first start of the season, facing plenty of pressure from CSUDH throughout the match. The Toros outshot the Broncos 11-0 in the first half Sunday.
Miguel Vazquez put the host CSUDH squad on the board just 18 seconds into the match, putting a one-touch shot past Iniguez after receiving a through ball into the box.
The Toros added two more scores before CPP managed to counter with a goal of its own. Junior forward
Jesus Mitre used his quickness to create a breakaway chance against CSUDH goalkeeper Juan Quiroz. Mitre's shot attempt was stopped but
Brandon Cortez was there to knock in a rebound opportunity. It marked the first career score for Cortez, a freshman from Mission Viejo.
After the Toros got another goal to push the margin back to three, the Broncos tallied the final score of the match at the 89:01 mark.
Abraham Gomez received a pass in the center of the box and then redirected the ball wide to
David Carrillo, who sent a shot to the back of the net for his first career goal.
The Broncos will continue this road stretch next weekend with matches at Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus. Those two opponents hold first and second place respectively in the conference's South Division.
