ST. GEORGE, Utah - Despite a series of career performances with four Broncos in double figures, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team suffered an 80-75 overtime loss Monday to Dixie State in both teams' season opener.
Mian Dingle,
Rachel Hatch and
Lauren Goecke set career bests in points while
Ashley Boggs posted a double-double performance in her Bronco debut. Before fouling out late in the second half, Boggs collected 12 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes of action. A senior transfer from the University of San Francisco, Boggs is the first player to post a double-double in a CPP debut since Ally Smith accomplished the feat on Nov. 18, 2005.
Also of note, Hatch racked up seven steals while
J.J. Judge nearly tallied her first career double-double with a nine-point and nine-rebound showing.
Led by a 7-for-8 performance from
Lisha Elsenbach, CPP as a team went 16-for-18 at the free throw line to help build up a 15-point lead with five minutes to play in the second half. A Broncos' scoring drought from that point forward helped Dixie State storm back and a layup from Kirsten Marie Liana with three seconds left in regulation tied the score at 69-69 to force overtime.
Despite going 14-for-27 at the line through the first 40 minutes, the Red Storm went a perfect 7-for-7 at the charity stripe in overtime to pull away for the five-point win.
The Broncos drop to 0-1 on the season and they'll now shift their focus to their home opener Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Fresno Pacific.
The Broncos got off to a strong start Monday with Judge knocking down a three-pointer in the game's opening possession. On the opposite end of the floor,
Rian Mew collected a steal and that led to a Goecke layup to put CPP ahead 5-0 early.
Dixie State managed to catch up with the Broncos and the two teams traded the lead back and forth through the first 12 minutes of play.
Trailing 24-23, CPP put together an 11-0 run between the 7:48 and 3:21 marks. Boggs played a key role in the team's dominant play during that stretch as the Petaluma native collected six points, three rebounds and two blocks in that run.
The visiting CPP squad took a 39-31 lead into the half after the Red Storm managed to knock down a last-second jumper before the buzzer sounded.
From that shot, Dixie State seemingly carried a bit of momentum into the second half. Through the first nine minutes of that second period, the Red Storm outscored the Broncos 17-10 and pulled to within 49-48 with 11:20 to play.
Hatch snapped that DSC run with a jumper and CPP steadily built up its lead over the next 10 minutes of action. The Broncos fell into a scoring drought from the 4:48 to 1:19 marks though and that allowed the Red Storm to pull within striking distance once again. A free throw from Hatch put the CPP lead at 69-67 going into DSC's final possession and the layup by Liana pushed the game into overtime.
A key three-point play from Johnna Brown gave the Red Storm a 78-75 advantage at the 1:21 mark in overtime and the Broncos went 0-for-2 from the field in the final minute to eliminate any chance of a comeback.
